Would you love to add chair rail to a room but can’t swing the installation cost? Find out how to install chair rail below and do it yourself. You’ll be proud of the results.

How to install chair rail: First steps

Chair rail adds a nice touch to a room and also helps protect the walls from damage from the backs of chairs. It is often seen in dining rooms but can be added to almost any room.

The first step in any installation is deciding on the type of chair rail you like since there are various styles to choose from. You’ll also need to determine whether you want paneling or wainscoting below the chair rail or just bare walls.

Measuring for materials and how to cut chair rail

When you have chosen a style, measure the room to determine the amount of materials you will need. Simply measure corner to corner around the room and add the dimensions. It’s good to purchase a little extra to ensure you have enough to finish.

When your materials are on site, and you’re ready to begin, collect the following tools together:

  • pencil
  • level
  • chalk line
  • masking tape
  • tape measure
  • miter saw, or miter box, and hand saw
  • construction adhesive
  • sandpaper
  • wood filler and sealant

Before beginning to install, you may want to chalk a level line around the room to mark the top of the chair rail. This will make positioning the pieces quick and easy. How high should a chair rail be? A typical height is about 32” (81 cm), but you can adjust this to your liking or to fit with other decor in the room.

If you can’t find a one-piece chair rail moulding to suit your taste, make your own by combining a flat backer board overlaid with a decorative piece of trim that appeals to you.

How to install chair rail without a nail gun

Chair rail can be installed with or without nails. A good construction adhesive with a fast “grab” will quickly hold it in place. If you wish, you can add a few nails, but when using adhesive, you will not need nearly as many.

Follow these steps for installation:

  1. If you are also installing wainscoting, install this first around the room. The chair rail will then sit halfway across the top of the wainscoting to provide a finished look.
  2. Starting in one corner, measure the first length of chair rail.
  3. Cut it to fit and make a 45° cut (with the miter saw) when the chair rail meets a corner.
  4. Apply adhesive to the back of the piece after test-fitting it.
  5. Position the chair rail on the wall, matching the top of the rail with your level line.
  6. Press along to the length of the moulding to seat it into the glue, then hold it in place with masking tape or another means until the glue has set.
  7. Proceed in the same way for the next piece and work around the room.
  8. After the glue has set, fill any holes with wood filler and caulk along the seams and corners with a quality sealant.

Wondering how to put up chair rail most effectively? Selecting a suitable construction adhesive is crucial to this project. Choose a product intended for wood and drywall with a fast “grab” or initial tack. This reduces the need for bracing.
