Gluing down vinyl flooring is easier than you think and a great DIY skill to have. Get the details below on how to measure properly, lay out the room, and then install it like a pro.

Why choose glue-down vinyl plank flooring?

Need new flooring in a room, or just want an upgraded look? Vinyl plank flooring is a durable, easy-to-install choice and is very affordable.

Anyone with basic skills should be able to complete an installation in a few hours. Let us guide you through the setup and measuring and, finally, the actual installation process. You’ll love the results, and we think you’ll be surprised at how easy your new floor is to clean and maintain!

When deciding on your new flooring, you must keep in mind that there are a few different flooring methods. You may have wondered, “Do you have to glue down vinyl flooring?” This is a valid question since some types of vinyl flooring are not glued down but are simply laid on top of the underlayment, and the baseboard covers the edges. This is called a “floating floor”.

We are looking at glue-down vinyl plank flooring in this article, and this method has the advantage of being held firmly by the adhesive. This can be a big plus in larger rooms or areas that get heavy use. Sometimes, the “click-together” floating floors can come apart, creating gaps.

Make sure to use the adhesive recommended by the vinyl plank manufacturer to ensure compatibility.

How to install glue-down vinyl plank flooring: Room layout and prep

For best results, you will want to prepare the floor and plan out your installation. This will prevent problems later and will enable you to avoid ending up with a very narrow strip of flooring on one end of the room.

Here are some preparatory steps to take:

        1. Fill any gaps or holes in the subfloor with a patching compound.
        2. Thoroughly clean the floor, ensuring a dry and smooth surface.
        3. Store your new vinyl planks in the room overnight so they will adjust to the temperature and humidity level of the room.
        4. Remove the baseboards and trim that contacts the floor so the new flooring can extend right to the wall.
        5. Plan out the installation. Measure the width of a plank and determine how many rows it will take to cover the floor. Then, chalk a starting line near the center of the room. Adjust your line so that the rows will be centered in the room.
        6. Chalk another line at a 90° angle to the first one. Measure the length of a plank and set the line so that you won’t end a row with a very short piece.

Here is a checklist of tools and materials you will need for the installation:

        • pencil and tape measure
        • chalk line
        • a saw that will cut the vinyl planks (consult directions)
        • utility knife
        • planks and adhesive
        • adhesive trowel
        • floor roller
        • knee pads and gloves
        • mineral spirits and paper towels for clean up

Consult the instructions for the proper notch size and use the correct trowel. This will ensure the proper amount and density of adhesive for your vinyl planks.

How to glue down vinyl plank flooring

When you’re ready to begin the installation, follow these steps:

          1. Spread adhesive over an area of the floor, beginning at your crossing center lines. Typically, you might apply glue to a quadrant of the room, but bear in mind the working time of the adhesive if the room is very large.
          2. Apply the adhesive evenly, holding the trowel at a 45° angle. Take note if the instructions call for a drying time before placing the flooring.
          3. Starting at your lines, begin gluing down the vinyl flooring. Place the planks tightly together to eliminate gaps. Stagger the lengths randomly or as directed.
          4. Firmly press each plank as you install it to bond it firmly to the floor.
          5. As you reach the wall, cut planks to the appropriate length and install the pieces.
          6. Wipe away any excess glue on the surface of the planks using mineral spirits and paper towels.
          7. When completed, roll the floor with a non-marring floor roller to press out any air pockets and ensure a good bond. Give the adhesive a few hours to cure before walking on it.

Note the directions on your adhesive label for drying time before using the room. Finally, reinstall the baseboard if it was removed, and enjoy your new floor!

What about maintenance and repairs? Vinyl floors are easy to clean and maintain. Many manufacturers recommend a dilute solution of distilled vinegar and water for cleaning the floor.

If a piece of flooring should come loose or break off, there’s no need to purchase a new tub of flooring adhesive. Try LePage Extreme Glue No Drip Gel. This is a high-viscosity gap-filling adhesive that creates a durable bond that is resistant to vibration, impact, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. It dries crystal clear and sets fast for quick and easy repairs.
